INNOVATIVE WINE LABELS

Packaging Design

HOW TO VISUALIZE TASTE

The purpose of this project was to create labels that artistically communicate information and awareness to the novice wine consumer through visual and poetic representation.

In this project, ten main strands of wine were used to help the novice wine consumer learn about their individual properties.  Five were red grape wine: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.  And five were green grape wine: Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurtztraminer.  These more wildly known strands of wine would help give a realistic reference to consumers trying to figure out their wine preferences, as well as being able to distinguish the differences between each of them.

Many consumers admit to skimming through the backs of labels of wines while shopping, looking for key words that would describe its flavors, texture and food they should pair it with.  The problem is that a lot of the information sounds the same; "full bodied, a hint of chocolate, and flavors of dark berries..." for example.  Therefore, when crafting each label, I wrote personalized poems that would represent my research to the consumer, engaging them in the process and include more description.  Each of the poems for the bottles contained three stanzas: the first would include the flavors, the second would describe the texture and the third would suggest the food pairing.  From my research, these are the three top factors novice wine consumers want to know about the bottle they are holding.

I'm a combo of fruits

Deep, spicy and dark,

With toffee and pepper

Beginning to spark.

My gripping tannins

Will make you transfixed,

With elegant flavors

That are powerful when mixed.

I'm hearty and spicy

And like robust meats,

Try with sharp cheddar,

Collard greens or beets.

My floral aroma

Delicate to bare,

Hints of smoked honey,

Apple, melon and pear.

Full bodied and round,

Smooth, silky and bright,

Crisp, light and dry,

With a slight acidic bite.

Sprinkle ricotta on

A dish that's Italian,

Serve me with with pasta,

Citrus or scallion.

DESIGNING GRAPEVINES

After researching all the unique qualities of each of these wines, I used the information I had compiled for the poetry and used them to design the line work of the labels.  Many vineyards already depict grape vines on the front of their wine bottles, so my mission was to keep this imagery to reference wine and where it comes from but take it in a completely different direction.  I wanted these labels to stand out and be fun and interactive for the novice consumer.  Therefore, I decided to play with the traditional structure of the vines themselves, making the outline of their figure symbolic of their descriptions (sharp, bold, smokey...) and wrapping themselves entirely around the bottle itself.  This gave the consumer both visual and poetic representation of all they needed to know about a wine, while engaging them in learning about and purchasing a product!
